Hammer Recording Studio

The Gear

Below is a list of some of the tools we have at our disposal but, there is no substitute for giving us a call and letting us tell you how we would capture your sounds.

What's in the Studio?

The process begins like most others, by discovering what you the artist wants as a final product.

Once we know the sound that you are going for we start with microphone selection.

Below is a list of the most regularly used in our Mic Locker. With experience with many varied bands, singers and artists the mixing studio recording room has anything a vocal recording artist would want.

Pre Amps

To make the perfect partnership we have options of API 312, Neve 1073 and 1081 emulations from various manufacturers. We use Universal Audio, Focusrite Red 7 and SPL valve preamps to match the Neumann U89 and other condenser microphones, and we have Warm Audio, Lindell and the aforementioned Neve preamps for the grittier sounding SM7B, Royer, R-121,Sennheiser 935, AKG 414's etc.

Of course, if we just want a rich, warm character sound we just run everything through the preamps and eq. channels on our classic British Amek recording desk.

Bass

Whilst we do have options from Marshall and Orange, most of our bass is delivered via the Ampeg SVT-Pro 2 combined with either a monstrous sounding SVT 1540HE or 410 HFL.

Also because Martin likes Fender basses we have a wide selection of options such as a USA Pro series P-bass, USA P-Bass Special, Mike Dirnt signature Strat style P-Bass,  Roger Waters signature series P-bass, USA jazz bass, USA performer Mustang. Also options from Ibenez and Gibson, if Fenders aren't your thing and the daddy of them all the Rickenbacker 4003.

Guitars

Amplification comes from a variety of Cab and Head options such as our Laney valve head, Marshal head, Ashdown Angel head, Ibanez head, most with corresponding cabinets.

For a more Blues type feel the Fender Blues Deville never fails to deliver.

However, for that big British sound the Vox AC30 with blue celestions can't really be beat.

We also have a number of in house guitars as alternatives to your pride and joy.

Drums

We currently have 5 in-house kits and selection of Snare options, all of which have been professionally tuned. Our selections are kits from Tama, Premier, PDP and Pearl (compression heads). Please see our photos in our gallery for pictures of our kits

Snare options (also pictures in gallery) PDP SX, PDP SX (acrylic) Premier, Cabria and Tama x2.

We have a wide range of cymbals but our top end range are Zildjian K series.

Keys

We have a number of small and large keyboards for midi triggering and our house piano comes courtesy of the Technics PCM PR307 with weighted keys.

Computing

For tracking we run a Mac Pro into Avid I/O 92's giving us 24 inputs. The DAW is Protools.

Monitoring

This comes courtesy of the classic NS10's, Genelec 8030a's paired with a 7050 sub kick, Adam A7X, Dynaudio BM15A's and the option of the ultra rare JBL 4315's (by request).

We provide free use of all our instruments.

How we Mix - Our Mixing Studio

The first decision in the mixing studio is whether the tracks need to be a digital or analogue mix.

For digital mixes we have pretty much all there is when it comes to plugins. We only use the latest Protools to run plugin collections from Fabfilter, Sonnox, Izotope, Waves and the list goes on.

We use a 40 inch touch screen monitor for mixing which gives complete control, with monitoring courtesy of the awesome Adam A7X's, the Dynaudio BM15A and our Genlecs supported by a Genelec sub.

For analogue mixes we run the recordings through the desk and make use of our rack of equalizers and compressors to make the classic sounds people expect to hear with certain music genres.

Our analogue compression is courtesy of DBX 160's and 117, Toft Audio FET, Stereo TL Audio valves and 1176's,
